How do I shop for a mattress?

Maybe you haven’t shopped for a mattress in a few years…maybe its been many years. Sooner or later you will need to face it….you need a new mattress! So, now what?
Most people are going to go on the internet and look for a mattress store in their area. Others will actually shop online and will purchase one..without ever actually laying on it! Sure, you can send it back if you don’t like it…but, what a hassle. The best thing to do is head to your local mattress store and try out a few. What you don’t want to do..is be one of those people who walk into a mattress store don’t want any help..and go from mattress to mattress… pushing on each one and assume you can pick the perfect mattress for the next 10 years.. by doing the push test!

So, “what should I do?”,  you ask….  Well, how about this….LAY DOWN!!!

Get a courtesy pillow protector…put your head on the pillow..put your feet up on the foot protection pad… and lay there- until your body decides if it likes the mattress or not. Doesn’t that sound logical?

The downside to this approach is that you can try too many mattresses and end up getting confused and fatigued. Believe it or not..trying out mattress after mattress after mattress can be tiring…then, they all start feeling similar..and you lose focus.

So, ” what should I do?”,  you ask.   Well, let the sales person do their job and let them help you find the right mattress set for you! After all…most mattress sales people (not all) have been doing this for quite some time and really know their stuff! So, don’t be shy…lay-down and let them help you find the right mattress for you..listen to their suggestions and answer their questions honestly.

However, in the end, make up your own mind…don’t let them sell you a mattress that they may get a higher commission on…  So, do your homework!

How to Buy a Mattress

Posted on: December 11th, 2013 by Ron No Comments

When you buy a mattress  it is one of the most major purchases you can make for your home. You will spend more time on your mattress than any other piece of furniture that you own. You should spend at least a third of your life on a mattress, so take a few steps to make sure that you buy the best mattress for your lifestyle.

Look at mattress websites to see what’s offered such as discount and closeout stores. If you haven’t bought a mattress in a while, it would be good to see what options you have before going to a store. Check prices online to see what you feel is reasonable based on what is being  offered. Mattress brands are often coming out with new styles of mattresses that are the same mattresses that are in stores now but with different names for different stores. new queen stacks 010413 002

You need to Decide on a level of firmness. This is difficult to figure out without first testing mattresses, different  physical factors can help direct you to make the best decision. If you have back problems, consider a medium-firm to firm mattress choice, depending on how you sleep. Back sleepers usually prefer firm mattress because lower back support is a must.for reducing back pain.

Pillow-top mattresses are best for people who sleep on their side or even stomach as long as you don’t have the banana back effect. Ignore the spring count that is given by a mattress company as proof for the quality of a mattress firmness or softness. Studies have shown that the number of coils do not actually affect how comfortable the mattress is going to be for you.

A mattress is a very personal thing and every person can be different. That is why  you need someone who knows what you needs are to help you get a good night’s sleep.

You need to measure the space you plan to put your mattress. Nothing is worse than finding out after purchasing your mattress ,that you can’t fit in your home. Check your space  in your bedroom, and then decide on a size of mattress to fit.

The queen sized mattress is the most commonly purchased by couples for its size and relative price. It measures at 60”X 80”. King size bed is the largest standard sized mattress available. It is 76”/80”.

Be sure the mattress that you purchase not only fits inside your bedroom, but also through all doors used to enter the room.

Typically,   mattress stores will have more informed salespeople and information on mattresses than a generic furniture store. Be sure that where you choose to buy has a good reputation and helpful employees. Test out the mattresses. In order for you to know how well you like a mattress, you must test it out in the store. Search around looking for mattresses that meet your criteria, and then lay on each to see how you like them.

Lay on each mattress for at least 2-3 minutes, and up to 15. The floor models are out specifically for this reason. Ignore descriptors on tags such as “ultra plush,” “super soft,” or “extra firm.” These aren’t regulated terms and are used freely within each mattress brand without consistency between them. Instead, just lay on the mattress to get a feel for how soft or firm it is. Try a firm, a plush, and a pillow-top mattress to get a feel for which type you prefer. A very knowledgeable person in the store should be able to guide you.

You also need to buy the necessary mattress add-ons.  Although buying just a mattress is all that seems necessary, you must also purchase  a box spring to support  your mattress as well. Always buy a new box spring with your new mattress, as old box springs wear out over time and lose the desired support and firmness unless you have a platform bed that does not require one. Also buy a waterproof mattress protector to cover your new mattress. This not only makes cleanup easier should something spill on it, but will keep the mattress protected as well’
